The Leslie H Paddle Scholarship 2009/2010 for postgraduate in engineering

The Leslie H Paddle Scholarship is intended for postgraduate research, which will further the art, science or practice of electronic engineering or radio at a university within the United Kingdom. It is hoped the award will encourage co-operation between industry and the higher education sector and that an industrial organisation will be associated with the Scholarship. Leslie H Paddle Scholarship holders who satisfactorily complete their research studies may use the title ‘IET Scholar’.

The candidate must be in the first or second year of a research programme and currently resident in the United Kingdom.

The Leslie H Paddle Scholarship was established in 1979 under a bequest from Mr Leslie H Paddle to the Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers (now in amalgamation with the Institution of Engineering and Technology). Mr Paddle was a vice-president of the IERE.

The Scholarship has a value of £10,000 per annum is tenable for a period not exceeding two years.

1. Download an application form from the ‘DOWNLOADS’ section in the right hand menu.
2. Detach the referee’s section of the application form (within Microsoft Word; select ‘Tools’ and then ‘Un-protect document’) and forward this to your referee for completion. Note that the reference must be submitted to the IET by your referee (and not yourself).
3. Your referee should ideally be someone who is in a position to comment on your academic ability (e.g. a college tutor) or, where this is not possible, an employer.
4. If you have already commenced the research programme please submit a progress report (not exceeding 4 pages of A4 in length) with your application specifying the subject area of your research, its aims and what has been achieved so far.
5. Please note that an IET award may be held in addition to a Student Loan/EPSRC grant, or similar, and company bursaries. Candidates who are receiving industrial sponsorship should indicate this in their application, stating the value of the bursary.
6. You must be an IET member (see right hand menu) prior to application for a postgraduate award and you (or your course of studies) must satisfy the educational requirements for Registration as either a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer in the UK.
7. Please do not post the form. The form must be forwarded to the following email address by the deadline: 20 April 2009
