Postdoctoral Fellowships 2009/2010 in Economic and Monetary Policy

Postdoctoral Fellowships 2009/2010 in Economic and Monetary Policy

Through its Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies offers yearly between 15 and 20 fellowships to post-docs in an early stage of their academic career. During their stay at the RSCAS, fellows work on a selected topic that fits well in the overall research profile of the RSCAS and they are expected to participate actively in the academic life of the Centre and of the EUI. Each fellow is assigned a professorial mentor. Their stay at the Centre should result in the publication of either a RSCAS Working Paper or a publication in a scientific journal or with an appropriate publishing house.

Selection Criteria
Applications for a Jean Monnet Fellowship should include a description of the research project on which the applicant proposes to work during a stay at the Centre. The main criteria during the selection procedure are the CV of the applicant, the overall scientific quality of the proposal, and the fit of the proposal with the research programme of the Centre. In the selection process priority will be given to proposals that fit well with one or more of the core research themes of the Centre. The current core research themes of the RSCAS are:

* Institutions, Governance, and Democracy
* Migration
* Economic and Monetary Policy
* Competition Policy and Market Regulation
* Energy Policy
* International and Transnational Relations

Eligibility
The Jean Monnet Fellowships are intended to support post-doctoral research by academics in the early stages of their professional career. The fellowships are open to candidates who have successfully defended their Ph.D. at the time of the start of the fellowship (1 September). Candidates are eligible during the seven-year period following the successful completion of their Ph.D. (in other words, to be eligible for the current call, the Ph.D. should be completed between 1/9/2002 and 1/9/2009.

Appropriate extensions to the seven year rule will be allowed in the case of applicants whose academic career has been interrupted because of maternity leave or illness. In particular, for each maternity leave, an additional year will be permitted, while in the case of a long or recurrent illness, the total period of illness may be taken into account in calculating eligibility. Explanation of such circumstances should be included in the application in the field marked “Additional Notes”. Supporting document will be requested from candidates proposed for selection.

Candidates who have received their PhD from the EUI can apply for Jean Monnet Fellowships only after they have been away from the Institute and have had a full-time occupation or other fellowship for at least one year after defending the PhD.

Nationality
Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the Jean Monnet Fellowships.

Languages
Fellows should have a good knowledge of the languages most relevant to their proposed research, and a working knowledge of English. A detailed description of each of the core themes and of the various projects based at the Centre can be found on the RSCAS web pages.

Two of the fellowships will be awarded as ‘Vincent Wright Fellowships’, in memory of the distinguished political scientist Vincent Wright. These fellowships are usually awarded to candidates working on European Comparative Politics or European Comparative History. The Institute for Democracy Constantinos Karamanlis funds the Karamanlis Fellowship on Democracy which is awarded in the framework of the European Observatory on Democracy (EUDO) project.
