Job description
As part of the academic funding scheme of NICIS, the national think-tank on urban development and policy, two PhD positions are available in the recently awarded programme ‘Grensoverschrijdende Gebiedsontwikkeling’ (’Cross-border spatial development’) of the Nijmegen Centre for Border Research at Radboud University Nijmegen. These positions are co-funded by NICIS, the municipalities of Nijmegen, Heerlen, Hengelo and Maastricht, the University of Tilburg and the Regional Chambers of Commerce. The project will involve close collaboration with the funding organizations, as well as with other researchers in the programme. Research activities will yield scientific as well as practical results. The 4-year PhD projects will focus on the possibilities to foster spatial development across the Dutch border. Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
Candidates for the PhD student positions should have a relevant Master’s degree, preferably with a background in spatial studies, human geography, border studies and/or governance studies. They are expected to have a strong interest in, and have some experience with, carrying out spatial research, as well as with liaising with policy-making sectors. A good grasp of both the Dutch and English language is essential.

Conditions of employment
Maximum salary amount in Euro’s a month 2.558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years.
Maximum hours per week: 40
Additional conditions of employment:
The successful candidate will be appointed conditionally as a PhD (1.0 FTE) for a period of 18 months. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 12 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended for the remainder of the period.
